The Cottage

Set in the beautiful village of St Fagans, ‘The Cottage’ provided a unique design challenge.  The original 1700c structure had been extended at least 4 times over the years leading to a jumbled construction that had dilapidated into a state of disrepair.

With planning restrictions determining the original cottage was of significant historical merit a proposed scheme would have to accommodate this, in its aim to provide a contemporary new home for a retired couple, planning for the future. The elegant solution was to remove the 2 later extensions and significantly rebuild the remaining elements, returning the original ‘cottage’ element to its former glory.   The upper roof is supported on a slate clad volume that floats above the living space to the front.

Around these a sunken L-shape extension wraps the cottage to the west and North, providing the modern day living accommodation all on a single level.   This block is separated from the traditional cottage by a glazed link strip that also runs vertically and horizontally at the junction of old & new.  Large glazing to the south and west terrace take particular advantage of the natural beauty of the surrounding environment.
